Sixth Form update

Birds of Prey
As part of Brakenhale's ongoing Wellbeing Programme, a select group of students had the opportunity to engage with Birds of Prey. This unique and exciting experience offered a wonderful chance to connect with nature, delve into the fascinating world of ornithology, and enjoy a refreshing break from the usual school routine. Beyond the interactions with these magnificent creatures, the session also served as a valuable stepping stone to discuss mental health and explore practical techniques for prioritizing one's overall wellbeing. It was an enriching session, blending education and natural wonder into conversations about student welfare.
Mental Health Champions Initiative
Now more than ever, we understand the importance of prioritizing mental health and fostering a positive working environment. Our Year 12 students were recently given an excellent opportunity to put these principles into action by participating in the NHS Mental Health Care Champions Program. Through this initiative, students will be trained to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental distress in its many forms and to confidently have supportive conversations with their peers. Moreover, those involved will have the exciting opportunity to create and implement a project for change within the school, aiming to challenge stigma and foster a more positive outlook towards mental health. We are excited to see the innovative ideas our volunteers will develop. Upon completion, all participating students will receive a Level 2 qualification, a valuable asset for both employment and university applications.
Cumberland Lodge Trip
On Monday 23rd June, a group of our Post-16 students attended a special workshop at Cumberland Lodge to mark the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta’s final sealing. Co-hosted by the Attorney General's Office, the event explored the Rule of Law and its relevance today.
Students took part in interactive sessions, discussed modern legal challenges, and helped reimagine a 21st- century Magna Carta. Their ideas will contribute to a national educational resource. It was an inspiring day that deepened students’ understanding of law, rights, and responsibilities in today’s world.
Wellington College Law Preparation Day
On Wednesday 18 June 2025, several of our Post-16 students attended the Year 12 Law Applicants Preparation Day at Wellington College. Guest speaker Lucas Hooper talked to the students about what to put in their personal statements, where to study and how to get through the Law National Aptitude test, a test that assesses their ability to reason and analyse information. A panel of legal professionals, pictured below, answered questions on their careers and students were also able to quiz a panel of current law students. Topics included how to represent a client you believed was guilty of a crime, and the personal skills required to deal with family cases including divorce.
The event not only helped students refine their university application strategies but also gave them clarity and confidence in exploring Law as a career. It was an excellent chance to ask questions, network, and gather practical advice in a supportive and informative environment.
Eton Summer School
We would like to give a special shoutout to Alex B, Mindy C, and Eleonora KC who have spent the penultimate week of term participating in Eton’s prestigious Summer School Programme. These non- residential courses are designed to support students with their university applications, offering dynamic, subject- specific teaching and the opportunity to learn and socialise with like-minded peers from across the country. We’re incredibly proud of their initiative and ambition in taking part. Please see below for their thoughts on the course:
ESUPC has been one of the most exciting, challenging and novel experiences I’ve had to date. I spent the entire week pushing the limits of what I knew, with likeminded and deeply academic people, forming new understandings and correcting misconceptions alike. Seeing what the competition is like outside of Brakenhale, and how much more there is to learn has really helped me visualise a realistic life pursuing academia.
I can’t recommend ESUPC enough for those interested in pursuing further study. It’s a 100% free experience, where you’re taught so much more than a curriculum with some of the brightest individuals you’ll ever meet.

University & Apprenticeships
Over the past 4 weeks students have begun the process of University and Apprenticeship applications. This has been an opportunity for students to reflect on where they see themselves in the future and to plan accordingly. Tutors have been brilliant at helping Year 12s in the beginning stages of their personal statements and letters of intent. The deadline for Medicine and Oxbridge students is September 5th and October 17th for all other programs. We encourage students to be working on these during their break so that the Sixth Form team have the opportunity to review them and support students to make any amendments necessary before the final submission.
In September 2025, parents will be invited to attend a Destinations Evening, where they will have the chance to learn more about how they can best support their child in navigating the final stages of their journey towards university or apprenticeship success.
Year 13 Prom
Year 13 Prom took place on the 26th June at the Village Hotel in Farnborough. It was a night of glitz and glamour. Students danced, laughed, and made their final Sixth Form memories with their peers. We have attached some photos to give you a snapshot of the event.
Looking Ahead - Year 13 Results Day
A-level Results Day will be on Thursday 14th August 2025. The school will be open from 9:00 AM. Both staff and parents are welcome to join us on this special day to celebrate the wonderful achievements of our Year 13s. Refreshments will be available for everyone. For many in our cohort, this day will mark the culmination of seven years at Brakenhale, a significant milestone worth celebrating!
