Literacy & Numeracy Catch-up
The Year 7 Catch-up premium is offered by the Government as a commitment to provide additional funding to schools. This is aimed at each Year 7 student who did not achieve the expected standard in reading and/or mathematics at the end of Key Stage 2 (KS2).
The purpose of this funding is to enable Brakenhale to deliver additional support, such as individual tuition or intensive support in small groups, for those students that most need it.
The coronavirus (COVID-19) catch-up premium grant was introduced in 2020 – 2021 by the government to support children and young people to catch up lost time after school closure. This is especially important for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged backgrounds.
Covid 19 Catch-up Premium Report
Schools should use this funding to support their students to catch up for lost teaching over the previous months, in line with the curriculum expectations for the next academic year. While schools can use their funding in a way that suits their cohort and circumstances, they are expected to use this funding for specific activities which will help students catch up on missed education.
For details about how catch up funding is used at Brakenhale, please download the document below.

2017-18 Report
Year 7 Catch-up Report for 2017-2018
Success Maker – Literacy and Numeracy
Pearson stopped running this programme soon after we adopted the scheme, due to this we are unable to report any positive gains from the programme. Due to this programme not running for the full year we had to look at how we could still support progress using different strategies.
The CODE was purchased to further enhance and replace this planned resource, funding allocation also covers the cost of the TA delivering the programme – £10,000
Year 6/7 Transition
Using information gained for the KS2 SATs both the English and Mathematics department were able to identify students who would require additional support to help them become up to expected standard. Using both the KS2 SATs and internal testing we could pinpoint the support that they needed and target effectively. These students were in a separate group and are now integrated with the rest of the students following the same scheme of work. For most of these students this transition has helped although some require additional support to meet expected standard.
On both sides of the year group an additional English / Maths and Science class was in place to support identified students – this was delivered during AM tutor time every day by each of the subjects Directors of Study supported by a Teaching Assistant, it also allowed leaders to purchase resources – £8,000
Tutorial Reading Focus
All year groups except Year 11, were part of the Tutorial reading focus, whilst this was initially just for Year 7 the exposure to different vocabulary and texts helped support literacy skills, this will continue next year.
A hugely successful programme was further supported by the purchasing of enough books for the next academic year as well as refreshing current book titles – £2,000
English as an additional language (EAL) support
This has worked extremely successfully and through immersion into English and support from the EAL coordinator a number of these students require little support to access the curriculum in English. This will continue next year.

2016-17 Report
2016 2017
The Year 7 literacy and numeracy catch up premium grant provides a funding allocation of £500 per student for those in year 7 who did not achieve level 4 or above in their reading and/or maths assessments at KS2.
Brakenhale is committed to the belief that every student has the right to achieve their potential. This ethos motivates all of the members of our community to support our students in their learning and promotes high expectations and challenge for all.
When students arrive at Brakenhale we are committed to knowing and understanding their academic progress. In addition to students’ KS2 data including English and Maths, we collect information from primary schools, and undertake baseline assessments in all curriculum subjects, reading comprehension, and reading fluency.
Literacy and Numeracy Interventions 2016-17
Success Maker – Literacy and Numeracy
Success maker is an independent intervention programme for children who are falling behind KS2 levels in maths and reading. This intervention aims to close the attainment gap of Year 7 students working below age-related expectations. It is designed to provided tailored literacy and numeracy programmes for students through levelled activities and tasks set and monitored by teaching staff.
Year 6/7 Transition
Year 6 students who are identified through discussion with primary schools as requiring additional support for their secondary transition are invited to an additional day. Three single day transitions are available prior to the whole year group transition. This intervention is targeted for students where there are social and emotional concerns, and literacy and numeracy concerns. The additional transition days are centred around literacy and numeracy strategies and teaching to support those identified students’ transition to secondary school.
Phonics Intervention Programme – PiXL CODE
Year 7 students with a standardised reading score of below 80 who are identified with difficulties in reading fluency and phonics are currently taking part in a new intervention. This programme is an evidence based synthetic phonics initiative which is designed to provide individual programmes based on areas identified phonetical difficulty. Two small groups of six students attend one-hour CODE sessions three times across the school week.
Weekly Reading Focus
Year 7 students have one hour per week timetabled in the Learning Resource Centre where they are encouraged to read and make use of the resource rich library of literature. This hour lesson is supported by their English teacher and the Learning Resource Manager who deliver a literacy based lesson. During these hour sessions identified SEND students have the opportunity to have 1:1 reading support with learning support assistants.
English as an Additional Language (EAL) support
A number of the students who require literacy catch up are identified as EAL. The school’s EAL Co-ordinator ensures 1:1 support of these students. The EAL co-ordinator provides classroom support, and individual support sessions where areas of reading and literacy difficulty are assessed and personalised strategies and interventions are identified.
Plans for 2017-18
In the 2017-18 academic year Brakenhale intends to further develop the catch-up team and deliver additional targeted intervention in Year 7 for those students identified with additional needs in literacy and numeracy.
The CODE Phonics intervention will continue to run to support reading accuracy and fluency in students. The capacity of this intervention will be further developed through staff training and early identification of Year 7 students.
The intention for Year 7 is to create a smaller English group in each half of the year where a specialist literacy teacher will deliver an adapted curriculum with support of a HLTA. This curriculum will be in line with the subject scheme of learning to ensure that the intervention is accessible and the students are able to apply their developed skills to their curriculum subjects.
Maths intervention groups with a focus on basic numeracy and arithmetic will be targeted for students identified from their KS2 data and baseline testing.
Year 6/7 Transition will continue in the Summer term of each academic year to support students in their move to secondary school.
Previous Years
