High Expectation and Challenge for All
It is with great sadness that I am writing to let you know that one of our Year 10 students passed away yesterday. They had battled with a serious illness for the last 2 years and shown immense courage and bravery. Our sincere condolences and thoughts go to the family at this very sad time.
Along with the Head of Year and Tutors, I have spoken to the Year Group this morning and a number of measures have been put in place to support them.
The students will be planning memorials and fundraising and when I receive further information regarding this I will update you.
This is a very difficult time for the school community as a whole but I know that the loyalty and support that students and staff show each other will enable us to move forward in a spirit which illustrates that shown by the young person themself.
If you or your family are affected by bereavement and would like some support, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
Jane Coley, Headteacher
Please could I remind you that we will be closing early on the last day of term, Wednesday 23rd March 2016. The school will close to students at 12.05pm.
If you would like provision made for your child to remain on site until 3.05pm please inform your Head of Year as soon as possible.
Monday 11th April is a school inset day and students return to school on Tuesday 12th April.
Due to an increasing amount of lost property being found around the school. Could we please remind you that in order that these items can be returned to students, all school uniform should be clearly named.
This is especially important for PE kit and could students be reminded to keep their PE kit/school uniform in their bags when changing and that valuable items should not be brought into school. If students do insist on bringing valuables into school they are the student’s responsibility and should not be left unattended in bags.
Please join us for our next PTA event. Tickets are available from the school’s main reception.
Language of the month – Arabic
The language of the month for March is Arabic. Among the 256 million speakers worldwide, we have quite a few Arabic speakers in school.
Sixth Form Trip 29/02/2016
On Monday 29th February, two A level Politics students, Madeleine and Kaisha attended the “Congress to Campus’ at Reading University. This is a programme sponsored by The British Library to support American studies in the UK. Accompanied by staff member Mrs Reilly, the students attended seminars on aspects of the US political scene given by two American Congressmen and distinguished academics from Oxford University, Reading University and University College London.
The highlight of the programme was the address given by former Congressmen Kramer and La Rocco, hailing from Idaho and Colorado and representing both of the main US political parties. During the day, the students were given an opportunity to meet the Congressmen and compare ideas with fellow students from schools across the south-east. Both Brakenhale students contributed to the debate by asking pertinent questions and both received detailed answers from the two politicians.
Students from the university ensured that the sixth-form visitors to Reading had a taste of campus life by organising lunch and a tour of the campus.
All Brakenhale participants were thrilled to have the chance to attend such a prestigious event and benefit from the experiences of the politicians and academic speakers.
We are running a Student Easter Raffle this half term. There are Easter Eggs galore to be won, tickets cost 50p each, available from tutors. Prizes will be drawn on the last week of term before the Easter holiday.
