Message from Headteacher
Dear Parents and Careers
It has been a very busy half term with lots of positive news to report. Our Year 11 students have shown what an amazing group of students they are by the way in which they are approaching their new Period 6 lessons everyday. This extra hour has meant they have been able to progress significantly towards their target grades and the AP3 data shows that they are exceeding their potential as a year group. I am very proud of the way they are so focused on their work and of the staff and parents who are working tirelessly to support them. We have introduced a number of interventions for Year 11 including the “Walking talking mocks” where staff lead the whole year group in the hall through past examination questions. The science department have been doing this on a weekly basis this half term and the results have been very impressive.
Students have been out on a number of trips and we have residential trips planed for the summer term for Years 7 to 10. It’s very important to me that our young people get the opportunity to visit companies and organisations that will broaden their horizons and raise their aspirations.
Our students have also been involved in a number of charity events including the Readathon where they raised over £800. This shows what generous, committed young people we have in our school.
We will be saying goodbye to two members of staff today who are leaving for pastures new. Mrs Hooper will be returning to Australia after 9 years of dedication to school. Mrs Martin, who has taught in Brakenhale for 12 ½ years will be moving up north to be closer to her family. We wish them all the best in their new roles.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support and wish you a happy and safe half term.

Year 7 Cake Sale
Year 7 took part in a charity bake sale between the 1st and 4th of February in aid of local charity Sebastian’s Action Trust. The year group worked incredibly hard to plan, advertise, bake, and sell throughout the event.
The positive atmosphere the bake sale promoted throughout the school was fabulous and the student population were keen to support the cause and purchase the sweet treats on offer.
Staff willingly offered their donations in an auction for a truly spectacular creation from Joshua in Year 7 and his mother.
The students were successful in raising nearly £400 for the charity.
We would express our sincere thanks to parents, carers, and tutors for their special efforts in supporting the event.
Year 7 Team
This half term four of our top Year 9 students (Jade, Toby, Yousuf and James) have been attending Maths Masterclasses run by the Royal Institution at Holyport College in Maidenhead on Saturday mornings.
They were fortunate enough to have a session about the Maths behind rowing with an Olympic Gold Medal winner. They have met many other students from different schools, some quite far away, and it has been a brilliant networking opportunity for them. They are gaining lots of experience and have been an asset to the school whilst doing so.
Science Trip 11/02/2016
On Thursday 11th February a selection of Year 7, 8 and 11 students enjoyed an afternoon touring the 3M Headquarters. Students were given the opportunity to observe some science activities and speak to staff from 3M. This sparked a great interest in the possibilities the future holds.
One of our students said:
“I was surprised at how many women worked there. I wanted to be a truck driver yesterday but now I want to be scientist.”
David and Dominik from Year 12 were recently part of a visit to the Auschwitz Extermination Camp in Poland. Both boys received places from the Holocaust Education Trust in order that they promote a wider understanding of the issues surrounding the Holocaust and intolerance in society.
This incredible and life changing experience all took place in one day with a 6.30 am flight from Luton Airport. The boys attended seminars in London both before and after the visit. We look forward to their assemblies and the impact they will have upon the wider student body.
Well done to the Under 13 boys footballers who won 2-1 against Edgbarrow School on Tuesday 9th February
Parents’ Drop in Session
There is a Drop-In session in the LRC for all parents every Thursday between 4.00pm and 5.00pm (except on Thursday 25 February 2016) . During this session staff are available to answer questions regarding ShowMyHomework, ParentPay, as well as the biometric identification system. Parents are able to log on to the computers in the LRC to access their ShowMyHomework and ParentPay accounts. If you would like to pop by to see us please come in to school via the Coningsby gate and walk across the courtyard to the LRC.
The Brakenhale School have raised an amazing total of £804.20 for children in hospital.
Well Done and thank you
Design and Technology News
In Key Stage 3 our students are coming to the end of their rotations.
In textiles students have learnt and gained confidence in using the sewing machine and a variety of fabrics. They have produced a fabric portrait.
In graphics students have developed their skills further from primary school and investigated more complex paper mechanisms. Using these techniques the students have designed and made pop up cards.
In Food Tech the students have been making “healthy” dishes and learnt how to combine ingredients to create dishes. They have experienced using a variety of tools.
In Key Stage 4 our year 11 students have just completed their second options day. We would like to congratulate all students who have dedicated their time to their studies throughout these days and Period 6.
The Tech department wish all the students much success in the forthcoming exams.
Year 10 have started their courses well and are creating amazing outcomes. Keep up the great work!
Design & Technology Team
The English department is encouraging all students to take part in BBC 2’s annual 500 World writing competition.
This is a great way of stimulating creativity, and is accessible to all abilities. Students could win books for the school as well as for themselves!
There will be two sessions on Monday 22nd and Wednesday 24th February in the LRC after school between 3.05pm and 4.05pm the first week back after half-term for students to submit entries.
Mr Sinclair will also be happy to read and give feedback on any stories.
Thank you in advance for your support.
Brakenhale’s generosity makes all the difference
The Brakenhale School is leading the way with other local schools to support a secondary school in
need thousands of miles away in The Gambia.
Earlier this year Mr J Radcliffe and Mrs J Clifton were asked by a local church if they could help
support The Revd J C Faye School in Banjul, The Gambia. The unusual request asked if the school
would consider donating any Science equipment (no longer needed at Brakenhale) to the
secondary school in Banjul.
Brakenhale has kindly offered to donate text books and equipment and these items will be shipped
out by a team based at All Souls’ Church in South Ascot and St Michael and All Angels’ Church in
Revd Tracey Williams, Associate Vicar in the parish, said ‘I’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity
of Brakenhale and the willingness to help school students in The Gambia – the donations made
by The Brakenhale and other local schools will support the teaching of Science in the school and
help the Gambian students prepare for work when they leave school. Education is so very
important in the lives of our children here in Bracknell, but especially so in The Gambia.’
It is planned for the equipment to be packed into crates and shipped to the school by sea – a
journey that will take about 6 weeks – and it is hoped that The Brakenhale students will be able
to help with the packing of the crates. The church team are visiting the Revd J C Faye School
when they spend a week in The Gambia in February; they will be able to see the rooms in the
school where the laboratories will be based and the new equipment will be used. The team will
let the Science teachers at the Revd J C Faye School know about the generous gifts on the way
from local schools in the Bracknell area.
