Message from Headteacher

I have been contacted by some local residents who are feeling somewhat upset about parents/carers, smoking close to/at the school gates (waiting to collect pupils) which in some cases means outside their homes and littering as a result. Please could I ask all parents/carers to be mindful of our neighbours and refrain from smoking at the entrance to the school premises. We have been talking to and reminding all students about our zero tolerance stance on smoking both on the school grounds and at any point whilst they are in uniform; your help in modelling this to them would be hugely appreciated.

Many thanks
Jane Coley

Year 13 Parents Evening

Parents’ Evening for students in Year 13, which will be held between 4.00pm and 7.00pm on Monday 2nd November 2015 in the 6th Form Centre. This will be a chance for you to meet your son/daughter’s teachers, review their progress and discuss any necessary support required before the examinations in the summer.

Tutors and teaching staff from all subject areas will be present and an appointment sheet is attached to allow your son/daughter to arrange a time with each subject teacher or tutor. We urge you to attend, with your son/daughter, at this important time in their education.

Upcoming Core Science ISA days:

All year 10 and 11 students will be participating in a full day off timetable to complete their ISA, which is the coursework for Science and makes up 25% of their final grade in Core Science.

Year 10 core ISA will be Friday November 6th
Year 11 core ISA will be Monday October 19th

Students will be doing some preparation in lessons, but will be expected to do some independent study at home to prepare for their ISA. There are resources that can be used to help revise which can be found on Show My Homework.

Thursday 8th November was National Poetry Day. To celebrate this, we ran a whole school poetry competition on the theme of ‘light’. The quality of entries was very impressive with over 100 students having a go!

The winners were:
KS4/5 – Obinna Dickson (Year 13)
KS3 – Miriam Amponsah (Year 8)

Both received a certificate, a £15 book token and a booklet containing a selection of the best poems in the competition (theirs included, of course!).

Congratulations to them, and a massive thank you too all those who took part!

They both receive £15 in book tokens and a certificate for outstanding poetic awesomeness

On Friday 16th October 2015, The Drama department was thrilled to take the year 10 GSCE/AS-A level and Year 9 high achievers to review a Tony Award winning production “In the Heights” at Kings Cross Theatre London.

The trip was absolutely fantastic with all students on board having a wonderful experience declaring the production to be “an eye opener” and something that is “out of this world”, and “far exceeding the imagination”.

All students were exemplary on the entire journey and have certainly represented Brakenhale with the highest of expectations and we would like to take this opportunity to thoroughly thank all parents/guardians for their remarkable support with the trip enabling our students to have this “out of this world experience”.

Thank you so much once again.

DramaSylvia Young Theatre School

The Drama department is very proud to have Danielle Rabulan, a Year 9 high achiever student, representing Brakenhale School at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for a special experience day.

The Sylvia Young Theatre School is renowned for educating a range of top name performance artists, including music and acting professions. We have high hopes that Danielle will follow in the footsteps of the greats, and take inspiration from the Performing Arts to set, and achieve high aspirations.
