The Brakenhale School has been given a special mention by Luke Brown on the London Studio Centre School website regarding his Year 10 Dance project for Pitch at South Hill Park. Sited in his biography the website states
‘Last month, Luke and 80collective co-ordinated Pitch, a ‘scratch night’ and platform for new and emerging choreographers to present work. As well as hosting the event at South Hill Park, Luke choreographed ‘All Of Us Here’ for Berkshire County Dance Company Youth and Brakenhale Secondary School, described by reviewers as “a moving and touching piece” and “an important message for our youth successfully delivered”.’
It is fantastic that the dance students have been mentioned in such a special way by London Studio Centre, one of the top providing vocational dance institutes in the country with a fantastic reputation.
On Sunday 7th June six of our students auditioned and successfully gained places in the Berkshire County Dance Company Youth (BCDCY). The students will be working with a range of different professional dancers and choreographers and take part in a range of performances as part of the company. Feedback from Lena Dee, the Company Director, has been extremely positive and the competition for places was very high. Congratulations to the students.
Well done to all the Year 10 and Year 11 students who attended GCSE Maths revision last Saturday, Sunday and Monday. There were over 100 students in all who attended the Maths revision sessions on Saturday and Sunday morning from 10.00am to 12.00pm run by the Maths department. The students concentrated on the best guess paper 2 topics for their GCSE exam on Monday. There were more than 130 Year 10 and 11 students who attended breakfast revision from 7.30am to 8.30am on Monday morning before their Maths paper 2 GCSE exam.
At the Full Governing Body meeting, which took place on Tuesday 9th June, the school bid farewell to three long standing governors.
Andy Young, until recently Chair of Governor said: “The end of the summer term sees three experienced Governors saying goodbye to The Brakenhale School, after giving over 60 years of service to the school between them. Jane Watkins has many years experience as a Governor, and during her tenure was the Chair of several Committees and a member of various working groups. Pam Dorey also has many years experience and became a well known face around the school, becoming an expert in contracts and Governor oversight of external school visits. Mike Beadsley brought his previous work experience to his role as a Governor and in addition to being chair on the Curriculum Committee, also served as Vice-Chair of Governors. All three of them have given sterling service as Governors at the school.
“All three of them brought a great deal of experience and dedication to the school and to all students and staff. I would like to thank them, on behalf of the school and the Governing Body, for their support, time given and dedication to their role. They will be missed around the school and I wish them well for the future.”

Growth Minds Set 22/06/2015
We would like to invite you to a Growth Minds Set information session on Monday 22nd June from 6.30-7.30pm led by our newly appointed Assistant Headteacher Lisa Baveystock.
The session will give an overview of and an opportunity to discuss the work of:
Carol Dweck, psychologist and lecturer at Stanford University, the power of the growth mindset
Matthew Sayed, writer and world table tennis champion (after many hours of practice)
Dr Karl Morris, golf coach who explores the power of beliefs and how they can affect you
It will also be very much based on Lisa’s own experience in teaching and our desire as a school to make a difference to the lives of our students. There are many benefits of attending the session all of them focused around giving you further ideas on how to encourage and help your child succeed whilst gaining an understanding of the power of the Growth Mindsets philosophy.

Wonder of Words Young People’s Literary Festival and Summer Fair
On Saturday 4 July 2015 Charters School will be holding Wonder of Words, its annual young people’s literary festival and summer fair. For this year’s Wonder of Words Festival Charters have again managed to provide a brilliant line-up of author events, featuring some of the hottest authors currently writing for children and young adults (and one scorching hot illustrator). Charters are very excited to be hosting Abi Elphinstone, Tamsyn Murray and The Etherington Brothers and believe this is a programme which has a little something for everyone. This year they are also offering multi-event group tickets as they know that quite a few visitors last year enjoyed their first event so much that they stayed on for the whole day.
Full details of the programme and how to purchase tickets using a credit card can be found at www.chartersschool.org.uk/WoW15
